Just Peace Church

A Just Peace Church?

In 1985, the UCC’s General Synod passed a Just Peace Pronouncement calling on all settings of the church to be a Just Peace Church.  The pronouncement defined Just Peace as “the interrelation of friendship, justice, and common security from violence” and called the church to “a vision of shalom rooted in peace with justice and opposition to the institution of war.”

In 2011, after a decade of study, the assembled representatives of the World Council of Churches, the world’s largest cooperative group of protestant churches, representing over 500 million members, issued An Ecumenical Call to Just Peace.  This document rejects the concept of Just War and calls the institutional church and its members to “embrace social justice, the rule of law, respect for human rights, and shared human security.”

The Just Peace Team at FCC UCC SB seeks to provide opportunities for members and friends of the church to explore what it means to be a Just Peace Church.  It also seeks to identify opportunities for the congregation, members, and friends to participate in peacemaking initiatives, work for justice, and build community.
